Curious George: Not how I remember from childhood

My son LOVES Curious George.  He got hooked on the movie which is pretty entertaining (even for adults) and features the voices of Will Ferrell, Drew Barrymore and Dick Van Dyke.

Overall it's a feel good family movie, and my son loves to reenact some of the scenes.  Jack likes to say he is George and pretends (thankfully) to make messes and get into mischief.

The other day, I discovered a few copies of the Curious George books that use to be mine as a young girl. "Jack's going to love these!" and  I run into his room to show him the books, he's excited and we settle down into his bed to read the very first Curious George in the series.

The story begins in the jungle, with George swinging from a vine eating a banana looking very content.  Even the narrator says, "He was very happy."  In the next few pages we meet the Man with the Yellow Hat, who spots George and says, "What a nice little monkey.  I would like to take him home with me."

What a minute?  What?   George doesn't go with the Man in the Yellow Hat on his own free will?  He is stolen from his home??

Sure enough...
How awful is that?  And in the book it says that George was sad... Poor George!  Why don't I remember this from my childhood?

As if that wasn't bad enough, here are some additional events that happened to George once he arrives in the big city:

Relaxing with a pipe before bed....

Getting put in jail...

And it ends with George being brought to the zoo to live!  Because his natural habitat in Africa obviously wasn't the best place for a monkey.

The book was first published in 1941, where laws against capturing wild exotic animals weren't in place and the surgeon general had yet given out his/her warning about smoking being deadly.  And the fact that my son enjoys the books are the reasons they will stay in our library.

Yes, I may 'skip' over the parts I find inappropriate (and slightly disturbing) and will definitely talk to Jack about them when he starts asking questions, but at the moment he loves Curious George.  And really who can not help but love this curious monkey who always ends up getting into mischief?
