Jack. Is. Officially. Potty. Trained.
WOOOO HOOOO!
I really didn't think this day would ever come. I mean, I knew he wouldn't be going to college still in diapers (I only had that dream once), but this has been the toughest milestone for us to achieve.
He first used the potty last July, and I don't know why I thought that's all it would take, but instead it has been almost over a year of trying to to get him out of diapers.
Here is what worked for us:
1.
We used little Match Box cars as a reward. In the beginning he got one for every time he used the potty and then increased the number of times as he got better. For number two, which was the toughest for him to master, we bribed I mean REWARDED him with bigger items. Toy grill, toy weed whacker and a stop sign were a few items on the list. We now are using the potty without any motivation.
2. Time.
With both of us working we really didn't give Jack the attention he needed to get him potty trained. To be honest, sometimes it was just easier to put him in a diaper when we went out, so we didn't have to worry about any accidents. Once school let out we took away his diapers, stuck around home more until he was using the toilet more than going in his pants.
3 Find the right kind of underwear.
I was at Target and happened upon some training pants (aka underwear). Not wanting to waste money on pull ups, I bought a few pairs to try out. And we've had a lot of success with the pants. When he does have an accident it minimizes the puddle on the floor and makes clean up easier. Another bonus is Jack could feel when he was wet unlike his Pampers.
| These things are awesome! I just actually bought two more packs! |
So that was how we potty trained our son. What worked for you?
| Love the proud look on his face! |
