Introducing...

Miss Scarlett Lorraine

Scarlett was born on July 10, 2014 at 3:42 pm.  She weighed 7.2 pounds and 19 3/4 inches.  She is beautiful and completely perfect.

As many of you know, I was induced because I had gestational diabetes, and it was a completely different labor experience than I had with Jack.

I was instructed to call the Labor and Delivery room at the hospital at 6 am that day to make sure that they had space available.  I was really nervous about this, knowing that I could very possibly be bumped later on in the day or to another day completely.  Mom had flown up for the delivery and I really didn't want her to miss this opportunity.  Luck would have that they had the space and asked if we could be there by 6:45; with about a 25 minute commute we scrambled to  get ready.

We arrive, get checked in and by 9 o'clock I was put on Pitocin.

And then we waited and waited.  That was the worst part of this whole procedure.  With Jack, my water broke at home at 1:30 in the morning, we were at the hospital by 3:30 am and Jack was born at 12:55 pm.

I slowly started having contractions, they weren't super painful until my OB doctor broke my water at around 11:30.  Going into this I was not against getting an epidural. I received one for Jack after 5 hours of back labor, but I wanted to see how far I could go.  In my mind, I was hoping to at least make it to 6 cm dilated.  I progressed fairly quickly, but by 2 o'clock I couldn't take the pain any longer and could feel the exhaustion setting in.  I pushed for 2 in a half hours with Jack, and if that happened again I was unsure if I would have the strength.  And yet again, I was in labor through lunch and was absolutely starving.  Those ice chips can only take you so far.

By 2:30 I had an epidural and I was between 7 and 8 cm dilated.  I surpassed my goal of 6 cm!  Things began to advanced pretty quickly.  I began to push around 3:15 and Scarlett was born at 3:42.  Much quicker the second time around.  I didn't have the epidural through my IV since I was so close to delivering, so I could feel this labor much more so.

Jack's labor: 11.5 hours (2.5 hours of pushing)  Scarlett's labor: 4 hours (less than 30 minutes of pushing).  It's true when they say the 2nd one goes by much quicker!

Fresh off the presses!
